Video: Donald Fagen talks Arrangement and Chords for Peg

In discussing studio recording styles with a fellow musician/producer, I mentioned a Steely Dan documentary that I posted a few years back on the Forum. In revisiting this video, I came across more detailed and personal interviews where Donald Fagen he talks about the chords and the arrangement for Peg, from their 6th LP Aja released in 1977.

Walter Beck and Donald Fagen are the core duo behind the 70’s group Steely Dan. This pair gained notoriety for being obsessive perfectionists in the studio, and often changed musician line ups throughout the production process.

For piano/keyboard players, these videos are a gem, where Fagen shows chords that give Peg that full deep sound.

In this two part YouTube find, Donald Fagen is being interviewed by their music director Warren Bernhardt, (Himself a renowned pianist, producer and jazz musician).

  1. I recently watched these videos and was struck by how good a pianist Fagan is. He doesn’t have that many chops but his time and sense of groove is impeccable, and he has a great understanding of harmony. These guys weren’t playing around!

  2. Thanks for leaving the comment Keith. It was a bit of an eye opener. I really love the chords in the song. They are really nice and full.
