Mini Shotgun Microphone for Camcorders

Sennheizer Shotgun

If you’re into “YouTubing” footage of live acoustic music from your bedroom or the gig at the local pub, this product could be an ideal companion for your camcorder and should improve the audio quality of the performance recording .

Sennheiser have just announced the MKE400 (Pictured left), mini shotgun microphone designed for compact hand held digital video cameras.

The MKE 400 is a very rugged, versatile microphone designed for great video sound. Its compact and lightweight design (approx. 60 g) makes it the perfect companion for modern camcorders. The MKE 400 is simply attached to the camcorder shoe mount and connected to the external microphone input. For cameras without an accessory shoe there are shoe adapters commercially available that enable the microphone to be fitted onto the side of the camcorder.

Shotgun microphones are predominantly used in film and television production. Being highly directional, the audio captured can be more in line with the camera’s direction, reducing unwanted background or peripheral noise. This product looks to combine some of the functionality of the professional world of production with the hand held prosumer or independent video production.

The MKE 400 features a vol+/vol- key which adapts the microphone sensitivity to the camera type used and serves to reliably record soft sound sources. A switchable wind noise filter eliminates low-frequency noise. Handling noise is reduced by the integral shock mount and robust metal housing.
With only one AAA-size battery, the MKE 400’s operating time is approx. 300 hours. The battery status is indicated by an LED. For outdoor recordings, the MZW 400 professional accessories set, is available. The set includes a hairy cover and a 3.5 mm jack to XLR adapter so that the MKE 400 can be used with larger cameras.

1. All-metal housing
2. Maximum side noise rejection, optimised for video recordings
3. Switchable sensitivity to adapt the range and accommodate different camera types
4. Switchable wind noise filter
5. Approx. 300 hrs of operating time (from a single AAA battery)
6. Integral shock-mount for rejection of handling noise
7. Foam windshield included
